Getting Here From Out of State
There is a small airport in Monterey that a few airlines fly puddle jumper-sized planes to. If the marine layer of fog has moved in, which happens frequently, flights will be delayed or canceled. You'll also have to connect in LA.
Your better (and cheaper) option is to fly into one of the Bay Area airports. San Jose has the advantage that it's already on the south side of the Bay, and slightly closer to Carmel. San Francisco Airport (SFO) or even Oakland Airport would all be okay though.
You are probably going to want to rent a car once you get here. This will give you the most flexibility when you are in Carmel. It's about a 2.5 hour drive from SFO to Carmel. The Monterey-Salinas Transit runs a bus system for the area. The #24 Carmel Valley Grapevine Express runs down Carmel Valley Road, though it only runs Monday - Friday.
There are a few options if you don't want to drive down to Carmel. There is the Monterey Airbus, which is a shuttle van that goes from SFO or San Jose Airport to Monterey to your hotel. A one-way ticket from SFO will cost around $45.
If you'd prefer to take the train, Amtrak runs from Oakland to Salinas (takes about 3 hours). They run a bus from Salinas to Monterey. This is also a great option if you are planning on taking the train out to California instead of flying.
